How to Learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu – Are You Coachable?

Coachability: How to Learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Fast!

Coachability isn’t something that we really think about when we’re starting to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (unless maybe you’re starting off with the goal of being a very dedicated competitor).

But I would make the argument that the question “Am I coachable?” is a very important onefor you to ask yourself, because it speaks to your overall mindset as it relates to how you learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Let me explain.

In many years of coaching, I’ve had students who spanned the spectrum from extremely athletic and not particularly coachable to relatively unathletic but highly coachable.

In some cases the extremely athletic, coordinated students may still be able to beat the hardworking but coachable students on the mat (at least up to a certain point)… but if you look at the RATE of improvement, the most coachable students tend to
accelerate the fastest as they learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

An on a more focused level, the difference in performance during a competition can be remarkable.

Learn Brazilian Jiu JitsuI am not a big favorite of giving a play by play “dissertation” from the sidelines during a competition because you can actually distract your athletes (not to mention, with too much information their reactions to what you’re saying often wind upbeing a beat behind the action).

That said, if you coach as minimalistically as possible with a mind to fundamentals, it is amazing what a focused, coachable athlete can do. They essentially have an extra set of eyes guiding their performance… if they’re willing to let those eyes
SEE for them!

This point is fresh in my mind because I have had athletes who competed and did not follow any coaching while they were on the mat, but decided to just do what they felt like instead. The results of course were not so great.

Then at the end of the day on the same tournament another one of our competitors followed my simple cues to the tee and
executed extremely well, winning all his matches.

There are any number of reasons that people aren’t coachable – nerves of course, inexperience, ego – but my goal whenever I perceive there’s a “disconnect” is to speak to the individual and show them how to become more coachable – and to improve more rapidly as a result.

Even if you have no plans to ever compete, coachability as a mindset has to do with how open you are to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

It has nothing to do with how many moves you know, or who  you can beat on a given day…

As a matter of fact, to be coach able you must be willing to put
“you” on the back burner altogether for the time you’re on the mat.

In other words, instead of focusing on how you want the roll to be as you train and learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, instead just be concerned with expressing the art as well, and as efficiently, as you possibly can!

Your game will thank you!

Team Nexus Wins Over 40 Medals at NAGA East Coast Grappling Championship!

Team Nexus Wins Over 40 Medals at NAGA East Coast Grappling Championship!

With a squad of just over 20 competitors on Saturday, May 5th, Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness took home well over 40 medals at the North American Grappling Association’s NAGA East Coast Championships.

The NAGA East Coast Grappling Championships is the largest tournament in the area, with NAGA the largest grappling tournament organization in the Northeast.

The impressive performance follows a record year of victories in 2011, when the Nexus competition team won the NAGA Northeast Championships – with a just 9 adult students competing (overall team rankings are determined only by adult competitors’ points). Before the 2011 win, the team had already earned top 3 overall team rankings in NAGA East Coast competitions despite often being overshadowed in number by some of the larger associations in the Northeast, which often bring competition teams from multiple schools within their organization to compete under the same banner.

“To walk away with so many medals again at NAGA East Coast, including 12 Golds, with that few people is really gratifying,” said Nexus owner and Chief Instructor, Stephen Whittier. “Even though the vast majority of our students at Nexus don’t compete, we have a very supportive atmosphere where everyone contributes to the training and quality of the environment. I couldn’t be prouder of the school’s accomplishments.”

Nexus Wins 5th Fitness Center Award, Launches New Youth Life Skills | workouts for women

Award-winning martial arts, core conditioning workouts for women, and youth life skills and anti-bullying services!

Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness Earns “Best Health & Fitness Center” Award AND Launches New Youth Life Skills Program

This month Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness and SuperFit Womens Bootcamp was awarded the Gateway Favorites “Best Health & Fitness Center” Award for 2012, marking the 5th consecutive year that the school has gotten the top honors in the area competition. workouts for women

Nexus also just launched a new life skills curriculum for its youth classes, which integrates an industry leading personal development program.

Nexus founder and master trainer Stephen Whittier states that in the first two years of the competition his studio (which specializes in martial arts and workouts for women and men as well as youth character education and anti-bullying) was not even listed as an option to vote on, but won as a write-in on the ballot.

“A lot of people are surprised that we keep winning because there are all of these big health clubs and rec centers around,” he said. “But it makes perfect sense to us. In both our SuperFit workouts for women fitness program and our martial arts classes we average 95-97% retention every month - putting us in the top 1% of the industry nationally. In our programs people find a workout and lifestyle they want to stick to for the long haul… the secret being that they’re enjoying the learning process so much and finally getting results!” workouts for women

In addition to promoting health and fitness, Whittier also cites youth life skills development as one of his academy’s primary missions. The character development program he used previously was already very well-respected, with elements having been adopted by area school systems’ enrichment and bully prevention programs.

Last month Nexus enhanced the program by launching a new Life Skills program, which Whittier believes after extensive research is the premier offering in the industry.

“We’re really excited about this program,” he explains. “There are only a small, select number of schools in the country using this system, and in just one month we’ve had a tremendous response from our parents. Talking about positive life skills and values is easy… the real trick is to get the kids motivated to actively apply those principles in real life. This program is perfect in that respect and the results are already showing!”workouts for women

Mixed Martial Arts Coaching: Interview With Master Instructor Stephen Whittier | mixed martial arts near cape cod

Interested in Mixed Martial Arts Near Cape Cod and the Massachusetts South Coast?

Check out this interview with Nexus Martial Arts & Fitness founder, BJJ Black Belt and senior Sityodtong Muay Thai instructor, Stephen Whittier (from mixedmarketingarts.com): mixed martial arts near cape cod

Martial Arts Taught: mixed martial arts near cape cod
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai Kickboxing, and Self Defense (including both civilian and law enforcement-specific tactics). Mixed Martial Arts near Cape Co

What do you like about Mixed Martial Arts?  What – if anything – would change about it if you could?

When I started doing what we now call MMA, it was just “crosstraining,” or called by the early terms “Vale Tudo” or “NHB” (no holds barred). Of course, the UFC was much less evolved and more brutal in the early days, but in terms of functionality and effectiveness the martial arts world quickly got to see up close what actually works and what doesn’t against fully resisting opponents in a live environment. As NHB evolved into MMA — a regulated and fast-growing sport — we have seen a rapid evolution in the fighters as well. Now it is not representatives of various styles competing against each other, but highly trained and well-rounded professional athletes competing against each other. While some people still can’t get past the violent spectacle of the fighting itself (which I understand, it’s not for everyone), I have always seen the efficient and effective execution of technique to be inseparable from the art, and as a martial artist I enjoy seeing what the top fighters are doing and how they are applying their technique. Seeing the level of practical application of the martial arts grow with the sport is probably my favorite part.

What would I change about it? A couple of things. I could do without the whole “macho fighter wanna-be” identity that has grown up around some of the MMA culture. But the thing that mostly annoys me and other legitimate and experienced instructors I know is the fact that along with the rise of the sport we now have so many rebranded karate instructors and overnight experts claiming to teach MMA. Having put in many years of blood, sweat, and tears both training and learning how to teach — and not just martial arts but real MMA, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, boxing, and Muay Thai, etc. — it is a hard pill to swallow to see how many people are jumping on the MMA bandwagon in recent years. Nowadays it is very easy to hook up with a name organization, fly their flag, and pass as an expert.

As a sneak peek for MMA fans, any young talent at your school you’d like to call out as the next big thing? mixed martial arts near cape cod
Although the majority of our students are not fighters, we have some monsters on the mat coming up now, and if they chose to focus on competition there is a ton of promise there [including MMA fighter Jeff Perez]. One of my students, Cesar Barros, won a big show in Brazil last year beating a 4x BJJ Black Belt national champion in 32 seconds, and is preparing to fight again soon in a major Brazilian promotion. mixed martial arts near cape cod

Nexus is in good company with SBGi, Team Sityodtong, Northeast BJJ, Burn with Kearns – how did you become affiliate with these groups? mixed martial arts near cape cod

I have always sought out the best to train with in terms of skill, instruction, and the right “vibe” or mindset. I am really proud and honored to know these people, and have made some of my best friends through these associations. I have trained with Roberto Maia, founder of Boston BJJ (now Gracie Barra Boston) since the late ’90s.

I had really good Muay Thai instruction for some years before I worked with Mark, but the Sityodtong style just blew me away and I immediately became his private student and continue to work with him to this day. I am very honored to be one of his higher level trainers.

Matt Thornton is a great friend and another truly world-class coach, and was a big influence on me and many others way before I ever met him in person. He is low-key so many in the MMA world have not heard of him, but suffice it to say that SBGI was the first proper “MMA” organization, and a ton of top-level talent worldwide in MMA and BJJ has come from this group of phenomenal coaches. All the instructors get together a couple of times per year to network, train, and share coaching technology. I became the East Coast Regional Director back in 2006.

And as for Burn With Kearns, Kevin and I have been friends for years and even with a personal training background he’s shown me a lot of great stuff and helped me personally with my recovery and training over the years. I helped form the initial connections to get him in training MMA fighters, but he is a workhorse and he ran with it, and now has a great reputation as a top MMA strength & conditioning coach. As someone who knows his protocols inside and out after working with him for years, Nexus became the world’s first Burn With Kearns certified MMA conditioning center.

What separates Nexus from other martial arts schools in MA? Why should new students select you over another school?

We have a really unique thing going on at Nexus. In terms of training, we teach at a very high level, and not just in one discipline but in all the arts that comprise MMA — Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Submission Grappling, etc. In MMA itself, my instructors and I have also worked with some of the top athletes in the world. However, what we really excel at and have spent many years refining is how to take not just young athletes and get them results, but to really take men, women and kids of all ages (we have students from 3 years to 66 years old) and help them reach their goals. We also have a very professional operation with a multi-faceted program, so it is not “one size fits all.” Different people come to train and study for any number of reasons, and we have developed specific curriculums to fit their different needs. When it comes to a combination of technical expertise, professional service, and teaching methods, we are hard to beat if I do say so. mixed martial arts near cape cod
